jim and pam casino night scene - win
Can we talk about how good Casino Night is?
When talking about the best episodes of the Office, you always see Dinner Party, Stress Relief, Niagara, and a few others, but Casino Night may just be the best of the bunch. Obviously there’s lots of great humor in it - the exchange between Michael and Toby in the beginning (“Why are you the way that you are?”), Kevin being a great poker player, Michael’s love triangle drama. But what sticks out to me is the Jim and Pam scene in the parking lot. Both John and Jenna really act the crap out of that scene, and it always makes me a little emotional. I’ll go ahead and say it: Casino Night is the best episode of the Office.
I posted this on DunderMifflin as well. Even though we are are never actually told who he Scranton Strangler (SS) is, there is a lot of evidence that points to the possibility that Toby is the SS. I was just watching S2E22 - Casino Night, there is a scene in which Toby beats Michael in a game of Poker and takes his money. In the interview with Toby straight after this scene, Toby states that it "felt good to take money from Michael, I am gonna chase that feeling". What if this is an early indication that Toby starts to chase that adrenalin rush and eventually turns to murder to give him that rush. We also need to remember how Toby is later in the series, no-one pays attention to him, he has to watch Pam date, marry and start a family with Jim, as well as the horrible way Michael treats him. This all contributes to the possibility that Toby is the Scranton Strangler. I know this theory has been posted many times over but I thought I'd give my opinion on it. I hope you enjoy

Jim and Pam poker scene foreshadows Jim's later confession
In Casino Night, there's a scene where they're playing poker and Jim, with three nines tries to read Pam's all in bet. He incorrectly "calls her bluff" (Pam has a straight). I believe this to be an intentional foreshadow to the last act where Jim confesses his feelings for Pam where he, again, incorrectly calls her bluff (planning to marry Roy). Am I reading into this too much or does this seem plausible?
I feel like no one has talked about this here, but my jaw actually dropped at the fan question about the two psychologists named Levinson and Gould who studied the midlife crisis. That's an amazing connection even though it's a coincidence! These are the kind of fan questions they should be talking about. Back from Vacation
Episode written by Justin Spitzer and directed by Julian Farino.
Fast Fact: This episode was Justin's first full episode as a writer. He was also the person who wrote Dwight's line about absorbing his twin in the episode "Grief Counseling." Justin is the creator of the NBC show Superstore.
Greg Daniels wanted to explore the idea of the feeling you get when you have to come back to work after being on vacation. That's the idea that this episode was built on.
Writers would usually get about 9 days to write their first draft of a script. They would get sent off on Friday and have the entire next week to write, and then it would be due on the following Monday. But instead of Friday, they did not finish breaking down the idea for this script until Monday night. Then Greg wanted Justin to turn it in that same week on Friday morning, so he only had 3 full days to work on it.
They weren't actually behind schedule for this episode so one of the writers asked Greg why he was only giving Justin 3 days to write the script. Greg said he just wanted to "keep the pressure up, just tightening the screws."
When Justin brought the script back, it went through many rewrites.
Fast Fact: Julian Farino directed the first 3 seasons of the show Entourage, including an episode that Rainn Wilson was in. He also directed an episode of the show Rome.
Fast Fact: The photo of Michael and Jan was taken on a tiny beach set they built in the warehouse. It had sand and lounge chairs with a green screen behind it. Kent Zbornak and Phil Shea reached out to the people at Sandals Resorts who then donated products that were featured in the episode, like the umbrellas. Then Steve and Melora came to the set to take a bunch of pictures. Melora didn't actually have to be naked for the pictures, they did that in photoshop. Phil had the posters printed from a graphic shop in Culver City, CA.
The cold open with the tape recorder is completely scripted.
Kim Ferry, the show's hair stylist, put the beads in Michael's hair. Since Steve had very short hair, she had to put the beads into a hair clip, and then stick it to Steve's hair. She created a few variations and Greg picked his favorite.
When Michael comes into the office he's carrying a ton of bags. Most of them are from a deleted scene where Michael gives everyone souvenirs from his trip.
In this season, the wardrobe department got Angela a bunch of blouses that are never seen again in other seasons.
When Pam points out Jan in Michael's vacation pictures, he tries to cover it up and says "No, no, no. No, that’s a German woman named Urkel Grue." But in the original script he was supposed to say "Urlgra." Steve voices the character of Gru in the Despicable Me movies. The first movie came out in 2010, three years after this episode aired. But it's possible that it was already in production during the filming of this episode which is why Steve said Gru instead.
Todd Packer's line "how do I get you out of this picture?" when he's on the phone with Michael about the picture of him and Jan was improvised by Dave Koechner.
At 7:20, Michael is running down a hallway to get to the warehouse. This was the hallway where the writers worked, and all the doors are to their offices. When he turns the corner and runs through a doorway, he's running into Mindy Kaling's office.
When Michael starts running through the hallway, he runs past a woman in an orange hoodie sitting at a desk. That is Mary Wall, the show's executive producer assistant. They had all the writers close their doors for this scene, but they let Mary keep working. The desk she is sitting at is directly outside of the writers' conference room, which is the doorway that Michael comes running out of into the hallway.
Mindy's office was a dead end so after they filmed the hallway scene, Steve had to go down to the warehouse and walk up the steps to go into the little fake closet at the top. Then he ran out of it like he was coming into the warehouse.
When Michael goes into Darryl's office, he's eating a big plate of food. That was not in the script. He was eating the food that was always put out for the cast at craft services.
At 8:12, when Andy, Meredith, and Jim are gathered around Kevin's computer looking at the photo, there's a message on his bulletin board that says "don't eat the yellow snow." At 8:18, there's a Post-it note on Angela's side of the accounting partition that says "Angela, can I have $8 petty cash to buy some more jelly beans? I'll get you licorice and cherry. Thanks, Pam."
The snow outside when Michael is in the parking lot playing his steel drum is fake since the episode was shot in October. When Pam is in the doorway talking to Michael, it was Jenna's idea for her to not come all the way out the door. Pam didn't have her coat on so Jenna thought she probably wouldn't fully come outside and would just hover in the doorway.
In one of the deleted scenes during the luau in the warehouse, Meredith is trying to reach a box up on one of the shelves. She climbs the bottom shelf and the entire shelf comes crashing down on her. Kate Flannery did this stunt herself, even though they had a stunt double named Debbie Evans on set that day.
Darryl finding his iPod was not in the script and was improvised by Craig Robinson. He actually found an iPod and speaker somewhere in the warehouse and just randomly did that bit. Because they were supposed to be doing inventory for the plot, the cast really did go through some of the boxes in the warehouse to make it look like they were doing something, which is how Craig found the iPod.
At 14:44, Angela is starting to walk up to Roy, but when Darryl yells to everyone about finding his iPod she quickly walks the other way.
The whole set was shut down for the scene with Pam crying, similar to the Jim and Pam kiss scene in "Casino Night." They took hours to prepare and shoot the scene, and it was very important to Greg that Jenna was actually crying. He didn't want to put fake tears in her eyes. No one talked to Jenna for about a half hour, and she listened to a playlist of sad music she had created the week before to help her think of some sad personal memories. She listened to it until she started crying, and then they shot the scene. You can see Rainn Wilson tearing up in the scene which was not part of the script.
Jenna would listen to Norah Jones’ music on the way to work every day during season 3 to help her get in the mindset of what was going on between Pam and Jim.
A fan named Nilly pointed out that Daniel Levinson and Roger Gould are two adult developmental psychologists who have contributed massively to the field, including the study and definition of the midlife crisis. Jan's full name is Jan Levinson-Gould and she goes through a midlife crisis. This is just a coincidence and was not purposely done by the writers.
I have started watching the show about two months ago after I felt I had watched every clip montage in YouTube about two times. Some stuff came up and I just now arrived at season 3 episode 18. I don't know if I forgot or missed anything but man, the way Roy behaves when Pam told him she and Jim kissed at casino night totally came out of the blue for me. I mean I would have totally understood if he had just gotten a little louder with her but the way he started just tearing apart the bar they were at was completely unexpected. I don't really have a question I was just very surprised by that scene and would love to hear other people's opinions on this.
Somehow the old discussion thread got removed and I can't find it so here's another one in case anyone wants to talk about the episode this week. Again, you are absolutely allowed to post negative comments in these about the podcast. "Lady Luck roll those dice because we’re breaking down Casino Night written by Steve Carell! We start this JAM packed episode by explaining how Steve ended up writing this episode, we chat about Pam's wink to Jim, and Jenna shares some behind the scenes tidbits about the Scrantonicity video. Then we get some fan catches about Pam's casino night dress paired with her watch, and that Dwangela slap heard around the world. Finally, we call up the one and only, John Krasinski, to talk about his memories about this episode, the teapot, and that iconic episode ending. You can check out John Krasinski's, Some Good News on it's YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDjNX3nEfYo"
I was shocked that the extra part of Jim and Pam’s kiss scene from Casino Night was recreated for this episode and not from the original shoot! I always thought they had filmed it before. They had an amazing crew. I hope Oscar comes back for another episode, he was awesome! Gay Witch Hunt (with Oscar Nuñez)
Episode written by Greg Daniels and directed by Ken Kwapis.
Fast Fact: This episode introduces two new characters, Andy Bernard played by Ed Helms and Karen Filippelli played by Rashida Jones.
Ed was a huge fan of the original UK show, and he originally auditioned in New York for the US version for the role of Jim.
Ed worked with Steve Carell on The Daily Show.
Ed watched The Office and became a fan. He got a call near the end of season 2 to meet with Greg Daniels and Paul Liberstein about a new character that they wanted to introduce in season 3. The meeting went great, and he loved the idea for Andy. He was originally only asked to be on a total of eight episodes on the show because they thought that the Stamford storyline would not end in a merger with Scranton. They also weren’t sure about having Jim away in Stamford for so long, so they only hired Ed in two episode chunks. He was living in New York at the time, so he stayed at the Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel in North Hollywood, LA and rented a Chrysler Sebring to drive. By the sixth episode, they offered him a deal to stay for the whole season and he moved to LA.
Because Karen wasn’t in any scenes with Pam or Angela in the beginning, Jenna and Angela only saw Rashida at the table reads. So they would all have lunch together in Jenna’s trailer after the table reads.
Fast Fact: This episode was shot in late July. In early July, The Office was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series for season 2.
While filming this episode, they also had to shoot a promo for the Emmy Awards. Conan O’Brien was the host that year and he had to come to their set for the promo.
Fast Fact: The Stamford branch scenes were filmed over on the warehouse set. There were two big sound stages. One was completely dedicated to the Scranton branch, and the other was the Scranton warehouse and the “swing set” for whatever other sets they needed for filming. Things like the New York corporate offices, the hospital for when Pam has her baby, and Oscar’s apartment when Angela moves in with him were all built there.
When season 3 was ordered, the show was given a bigger budget. That’s why they were able to do more scenes outside of the Scranton office.
The Stamford branch scenes were shot for one or two days of the week and the Scranton cast members had off for those days, and then they would shoot their scenes for the rest of the week. They didn’t get to see John Krasinski as much during those weeks.
The flashback to Jim and Pam’s kiss shows what happened afterwards. They had to recreate the entire scene for this extension.
The scene where Michael goes over to apologize to Oscar in accounting was mostly improvised by Steve and Oscar.
The wardrobe department got the sweater that Angela is wearing in this episode from Urban Outfitters.
At 4:53, there is a post-it note on Jim’s computer that just says the word smile.
In a previous podcast episode, Jenna and Angela talked about how Jim’s talking heads in Scranton were facing an exterior window to show that he had a future outside the office. But in Stamford, his talking heads are facing the inside of the office.
Cornell does not actually have an all male acapella group called Here Comes Treble, but they do have an all female acapella group called Nothing But Treble that was founded in 1976. Their Instagram is nbt_cornell.
Rashida was really nervous and was convinced she was going to get fired. The character of Karen was originally written to be more ornery, soury, and mean. But Greg decided to soften her character in the next episode.
When Jenna had to come in to read with potential actresses for Karen, they had narrowed it down to three actresses. They had to do a Karen and Pam scene that was never in the show and was just written for the purpose of the audition. The casting crew asked Jenna who she thought was the best and she said Rashida.
Rashida thought the fans would hate her because Karen would be in the middle of Jim and Pam’s relationship.
The plotline of Jim pranking Dwight with the gaydar was written so that Jim would still have some kind of connection with Scranton in this episode.
David Denman had just got done filming a movie which is why he’s so in shape in this episode. But Greg had originally written that Roy was falling apart after Pam broke up with him. So that’s why they made him look so bad with photoshop in his DUI mugshot. They had six different photos and they had the cast vote on which one was the best.
State Farm Real Deal: When Meredith licks the hand sanitizer, what is actually in the bottle is clear gelatin mixed with club soda. But it was put into an actual empty bottle of hand sanitizer bottle without being washed so Kate Flannery said it tasted like perfume. She had to do about four or five takes of this scene. Kate actually did the majority of Meredith’s stunts throughout the show.
Andy kicking the trash can after Jim puts his calculator in jello was not scripted. Ed came up with that idea on the set and the writers liked it.
Oscar Nuñez and Angela had already known each other before from doing a sketch comedy show. But they didn’t know that the other person had auditioned for The Office, so they didn’t find out they were on the show together until the first day of shooting.
Oscar was catering and babysitting, and he still kept his jobs even when he got the part on the show because he didn’t think it would last. Kate Flannery did the same and she was a waitress. They didn’t quit their jobs until the show got picked up.
Michael kissing Oscar on the lips was not scripted and was improvised by Steve on the spot. He was originally supposed to hug Oscar and then lean in for a kiss, but then chicken out and kiss him on the forehead. Oscar had no idea he was going to actually kiss him.
Dwight trying to kiss Oscar after Michael does was improvised by Rainn Wilson.
Oscar was offered a role for 10 episodes on the show Halfway Home on Comedy Central which is why the writers gave the character of Oscar the 3 month sabbatical.
When Jim is in the Stamford conference room having diversity training he looks over at the empty chair next to him. This is a nod to when Pam fell asleep on his shoulder during the Scranton diversity training.
The gaydar Jim sends Dwight is made from a real metal detector.
Episode written by Michael Schur and directed by Tucker Gates.
Tucker Gates directed four total episodes, including "Threat Level Midnight."
Fast Fact: This episode now streams as a supersized episode, meaning it's longer than a usual episode. But when it first aired on NBC, it was the same length as a regular episode. Then NBC released a producers cut and added some of the deleted scenes back in.
Around this time, the cast started making exclusive content for the NBC website. Angela had a segment called "Adventures with Angela."
Fast Fact: On January 9th, 2007, Apple introduced the first iPhone and Steve Jobs did a presentation to unveil it. The cold open of this episode was the first-ever video played on the iPhone during the presentation. When Steve was demonstrating how to play music, he played "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. In the season 6 episode "Secret Santa," Dwight and Andy sing that song.
Fast Fact: Everyone's talking heads are in front of a window when they think they're losing their jobs to imply that their future is outside of the office. When they find out the branch isn't closing, all of the talking heads switch back to having the inside of the office behind them.
Pam's hair is different, and she has pink eye shadow and lip gloss on. The idea in the hair and makeup department was that Pam was experimenting a little bit because she was trying to break out of her routine.
Michael's wind up teeth going off at his desk was not in the script, it happened by accident and Steve Carell and Melora Hardin just went with it.
Phyllis is knitting at her desk in this episode. But in real life Phyllis does not know how to knit at all. There was a basket of knitting stuff next to her desk throughout the show so she could pretend to knit if she was in the background of scenes.
In Dwight's talking head he says "And right now, the title of Michael's book is 'Something Weird is Going On.' Colon; 'What Did Jan Say? The Michael Scott Story. By Michael Scott, with Dwight Schrute.'" The script only had "Something Weird is Going On. Colon What Did Jan Say?" On the day of shooting, Mike Schur added the line "The Michael Scott Story" and Rainn Wilson added the line "By Michael Scott, with Dwight Schrute."
Rainn has a "tell" whenever he improvises a line. The corners of his mouth go up in a smirk as if he's proud of himself for thinking of that on the spot.
At 6:21, the white board behind accounting says "Congratulations to all for our first (of many) Emmys. Steve was robbed!" in the box for Tuesday the 5th. On the top line written under Thursday, it says "In case you haven't noticed, there is a lot of colorful hooey on this board!"
At 8:23, Lori Socks is in the background. Her and her husband Steven were stand-ins. After rehearsing a scene with the cast, stand-ins take their place while the crew sets up the lights and the camera angles. This way the cast can go do things like get their makeup fixed, change their outfit, or go over their lines. Lori would stand-in for all of the women, and Steven would stand-in for all the men. Occasionally they were in background scenes like this one.
Meredith's storyline of trying to figure out who she made a pact to sleep with on the last day of work was cut from NBC's original airing of the episode.
State Farm Real Deal: Angela and Roy have a few flirtatious moments throughout the show. In "The Fire'' when they're playing Who Would You Do, Roy picks Angela. In "The Secret'' when Phyllis asks Angela if she would pick Jim or Roy, Angela picks Roy. In episode five, "Someone in the Warehouse," of the webisode series "The Books Don't Balance," the accountants are wondering if Roy took the missing money, but Angela says he has too much character to do that. Kevin asks Angela if she has a crush on Roy and she gets flustered. In "Casino Night" when Michael addresses the crowd and says "old friends, new lovers," Angela and Roy are sitting next to each other at the bar and exchange a look. In "Branch Closing" when Angela is trying to confront Roy, she tells him he's strong and capable. She also waves to him at the end of the episode. In "Cocktails," Roy asks everyone at the bar if they want a drink and Angela replies "oh, no thank you, Roy." In "The Negotiation," Roy comes in to get his very last paycheck from Angela. Paul Feig said they thought it was funny that Angela liked Roy while everyone else thought of him as a jerk. Greg Daniels said that Roy and Pam were more of a traditional relationship, and Pam needed a more modern and equal relationship. But it made sense that Angela would be attracted to Roy.
When Michael and Dwight are driving to David Wallace's house, the temperature in the car says it's 80° but the episode is supposed to take place in the winter. The episode was shot in August and aired on November, 9th.
David’s house is located on Lomita Drive in Pasadena, CA. It is three houses away from the house used on the TV show Benson.
David's house has a doormat that has the letter H on it instead of a W. The doormat belonged to the real owners of the house, and the crew didn’t realize that doormat was there until they were editing the episode.
Charles Esten auditioned with Rainn Wilson for a TV show called The Expendables years before The Office. They got the parts and filmed a pilot episode, but the show never got picked up. When Charles auditioned for the part of Josh Porter on The Office, Mike Schur asked how he knew Rainn, and Charles said he would bring a DVD of the pilot they shot if he got hired.
When Andy flips, Josh walking in to say goodbye and having Andy immediately calm down was Charles' idea.
When Dwight and Michael are role playing with Dwight as David, the scene was supposed to end where Michael says "Because he'd be intimidated and I, just... let's start again. Just be more scared of me, okay?" The part after that where Michael walks up again and Dwight acts scared was improvised. They had to cut the scene off immediately to keep it in the show because everyone started laughing afterwards.
Dwight going through David's trash was cut from NBC's original airing of the episode.
At 19:00 there's a dog in David's yard. The dog was not the homeowner's dog, the crew hired the dog and its trainer for this scene. They thought there might be more of a feeling of jeopardy involved if there was a guard dog in the yard. But the dog ended up being too friendly to be intimidating.
Angela says she doesn't want to drive all the way to Dunmore to meet everyone for the group lunch. But Dunmore is only 9 minutes away from Scranton.
Kevin suggests they all go to Cooper's. Brian Baumgartner and Angela went to Cooper's when they visited Scranton.
Creed's storyline of selling all of the office equipment was cut from NBC's original airing of the episode.
Kevin and Angela hugging after finding out they weren't losing their jobs was improvised by Brian and Angela.
When Jim and Karen are talking about whether or not she should move to Scranton, there's a sign behind Karen that says "Window of opportunity. An obstacle to one is an opportunity to another."
When Meredith is on the phone with Gary Trundle, the voice of Gary is Kent Zbornak.
I really liked this episode! Ken's approach to directing is fascinating. I hope they do more episodes like this one. Casino Night (with Ken Kwapis)
Ken Kwapis directed 13 episodes of The Office, including the Pilot.
Toby says they shouldn't invite the boy scouts to casino night because it's a school night. But when Jan leaves, Michael says "talk to you Monday" which implies it's a Friday night.
There was a meeting about how Pam's hair was going to look in this episode. There was usually a meeting about someone's hair whenever Greg Daniels or one of the other writers would go into the hair and makeup department. They were rarely there.
Billy Merchant's girlfriend in this episode is played by the same actress who played a waitress at Chili's in "The Dundies" episode. Her name is Amanda Warren.
When Michael and Toby are playing No-Limit Texas Hold'em, Toby calls Michael's all-in and Michael storms off. But Michael still had a chance to win.
Ken had an interview with Greg to work on the show. Ken told Greg that he couldn't understand the layout of the office on the UK show, and Greg agreed. Then they sat together and tried to draw the layout.
They thought about having dividers between everyone's desks but decided against it, except for the glass divider in the accounting department.
There was a lot of thought put into how Jim and Pam's chairs would be arranged.
Ken would stand next to the cameraman during a shoot instead of being off to the side watching a monitor in order to get a better perspective of the scenes.
Sometimes they would deliberately have the camera pan over to someone who was talking a little bit late to make it more realistic, as if the cameraman filming the documentary didn't catch something in time.
A lot of TV shows and movies use marks, which are pieces of tape on the ground that the actor must walk to and stand on so that the cameras can get the perfect shot. But they didn't use marks on The Office.
When Ken would sit with the actors for the talking heads, he would start out by asking some basic questions about the character's day or weekend, and then lead up to questions about whatever the scripted prompt was. It helped the actors understand their characters better.
Ken always tried to get to the set first to figure out how things would be set up for a shoot. But Steve Carell would always be there first in Michael's office preparing for the day.
After shooting a scene a few times, Ken would sometimes go up to actors and say something like "on this next one, what if you... you know what, nevermind." He would do this on purpose to try and clear the mind of the actor for more takes.
Ken had a big discussion with Melora Hardin about the scene where she's outside and she throws her overnight bag into the back seat of her car.
John and Jenna were not allowed to talk to each other before shooting the kiss scene. Because this scene was shot the night before the parking lot scene, Ken thought it would help set the mood if there was some distance between John and Jenna before they shot the scene.
Ken thought that having another camera angle to show Pam's reaction to Jim kissing her was too Hollywood-like and perfect. The documentary crew would not have known that Jim was coming into the office to kiss her.
Pam fidgets with her engagement ring after Jim walks away from her in the parking lot. This was not in the script. It was something Jenna decided that Pam would do in that moment because the ring was the reason she couldn't say what she really wanted to say to Jim.
Some actors on the show have their real name as their character's name. They did this for a lot of the new characters that weren't inspired by characters from the UK show.
Angela pitched names during the first season for Angela's last name, and Martin was one of her ideas.
Image for heading I was watching the scene in episode s02e04 "The Fire", and the part where Jim says he would do Kevin got me thinking about an alternate timeline where that was an earnest expression of Jim's feelings for Kevin and where it's not Pam and Roy's engagement which stands in the way of Jim's happiness, but Kevin's engagement to Stacey. So in this timeline Jim and Pam are still friends due to their obvious rapport and proximity in the office. The 'Trying to cop a feel, Halpert?!' incident still happens, but in order to help with Roy's jealousy - and to help her deal with her feelings for Jim - Pam tells him that Jim is gay, and so the 'I know you're a cool guy' scene between Roy and Jim becomes 'I'm sorry man - I know you're gay and I was just being a jealous jerk'. Jim's homosexuality leads to Pam's infatuation with him being a one-way street, and causes her deep and confusing feelings of sadness. Many of Jim's cute moments in meetings involve Kevin instead of Pam - it's Jim who falls asleep on Kevin's shoulder, and Jim often goes to chat at Kevin's desk, using the M&Ms as an excuse, just like with reception. At the Casino Night s02e22 Jim confesses his love for Kevin instead of for Pam, with Kevin replying 'What are you doing? What do you expect me to say to that? I'm engaged.' They kiss at the end of the episode. Kevin doesn't become the comically overemphasised idiot that he does in the primary timeline, but breaks off his engagement for the beginning of series 3. All the events around Oscar in Gay Witch Hunt s03e01 are about Kevin instead and it's Kevin who gets a 3-month 'gaycation'. In this timeline Oscar either doesn't realise or come out as gay, or is straight. After being rebuked by Kevin, Jim goes through with the transfer to Stamford. While there, he develops a relationship not with Karen but with Andy - who, as we've seen in the primary timeline, has been questioning and dealing with insecurity around his own orientation for years. When the merger happens things are not immediately awkward as Kevin is still away, and has been using the three months to try and get over Jim, his broken-off engagement and to come to terms with who he is. Pam and Roy go through with their wedding in between series 2 and 3. They are both essentially happy, and Roy never hits the 'rock bottom' he does in the primary timeline. He also consequently never has to work on himself to try and win her back, and doesn't attack Jim. Roy is the one in the warehouse who receives a promotion and gets the office upstairs, and so stays at Dunder Mifflin - never starting the gravel company, meeting his future wife nor learning to play the piano. When Kevin does return to the office he is thrown to see Jim there, and is hit hard when he sees that Jim is with Andy. Much of Jim's story in season 3 revolves around this love triangle, and in the end he decides to leave Andy in the season finale. Jim and Kevin finally get together during season 4, and eventually marry by eloping not to Niagra Falls but to Iceland, which had a referendum on same-sex marriage in 2006. All is well, except with Andy. The rejection by Jim and Jim's openly choosing Kevin over him causes Andy's anger issues to boil over and it is he who attacks Jim in the office after staying up all night drinking. He is dismissed from the company and is thus forced into showbusiness, where he becomes a successful performer and not simply an ironic YouTube success. So there we have it - what do you think? What potential plotholes have I missed?
Episode written by Jennifer Celotta, and directed by Greg Daniels.
Dwight being in a sheriff uniform in the office was an idea the writing team had for a while.
Fast Fact: This was the last episode they shot before leaving for summer break.
Steve needed to get off early to film a movie over the summer, so he only worked one day during the shooting of this episode. They shot 14 pages of material on that day. Every page of a script is usually about one minute of screen time, and the scripts were usually around 35-40 pages long.
Angela, Brian Baumgartner and Oscar Nunez all chipped in and got a coffee cart for the set since it was the last episode of the season.
Dwight’s sheriff costume was pretty authentic to the real Pennsylvania sheriff’s outfit except for the hat and boots, which are usually worn by Pennsylvania state troopers.
Fast Fact: Michael Scott trivia: On the TV show Young and the Restless there was a character named Michael Scott. Also, in The Office episode “Booze Cruise” when Jim puts Dwight’s stuff in the vending machine, there’s a bobblehead of Phillies player Mike Lieberthal. Mike’s full name is Michael Scott Lieberthal. Lastly, there’s a famous Irish writer named Michael Scott who writes science fiction.
Jim doing an impression of Stanley was written in because the writers knew that John Krasinski was great at doing impressions.
Mindy Kaling’s hair is up because for "Casino Night" she got extensions and they had to hide it.
At 4:08, when Michael is talking to Jim, you can see the couch in the reception area. There’s a lamp next to the couch and there’s a plaque hanging directly behind the lamp.
When Dwight shows Creed the photo of marijuana, Creed says “That is Northern Lights, Cannabis Indica” which is a real strain of marijuana.
The word “urine” is said 16 times in this episode.
Jim has a yellow Brunetti’s Pizza mug on his desk.
State Farm Real Deal: Steve Carell is wearing a band-aid on his left ring finger during this episode. He jammed it while playing pickup hockey, and since it was swollen he couldn’t get his wedding ring off. So he had to cover it up with a band-aid.
When Michael says “Take Cheech and Chong. Everybody knows that Cheech and Chong are funny, but just imagine how funny they would be if they didn’t smoke pot” it cuts to Angela rolling her eyes, but this was her reaction to a different moment from a deleted scene.
Michael’s line “Pam, can you take this down?” when he wants to have Toby tested was improvised by Steve.
The cast kept laughing during the conference room scene. In between takes Creed told stories about his band The Grass Roots and how they traveled with The Doors.
Linda the drug tester was played by Marilyn Brett.
Having green urine like Dwight in this episode is possible.
At 14:23, there is a framed photo of the Dunder Mifflin employees on a little table. It’s from the episode “Conflict Resolution” which comes after this episode but was filmed first.
Dwight’s talking head about his great-grandfather Dwide Schrude was originally a scene that Rainn improvised in the Pilot episode. Greg loved it so much that he waited for the perfect episode to include it.
The exterior of the Scranton police station was actually taken at the Van Nuys Courthouse in Van Nuys, California. The interior shots were taken on a set built on stage 2 behind the warehouse.
Pam tapping on the soda can that she gives to Jim was improvised by Jenna and Greg loved it. Also, Jim and Pam saying “Hi” and “Hey” to each other was improvised.
At 19:30, Hank’s name tag says Tate. Dunderpedia says that it’s Hank’s last name.
At 20:21, you can see the camera operator’s elbow in the shot.
In the deleted scenes, it’s revealed that the joint in the parking lot belonged to the two guys from Vance Refrigeration.
Here it is, the fact list for Casino Night! I really enjoyed hearing Jenna, Angela, and John just talking about being on the show together, it was awesome. It felt like we got to kind of see what they were like on set. Definitely the best episode yet in my opinion! Casino Night (with John Krasinski)
Episode written by Steve Carell and directed by Ken Kwapis.
Fast Fact: This is the first episode written by Steve Carell. He also wrote the season 4 episode “Survivor Man.”
Steve had a general idea for an episode where Michael would throw a casino night in the warehouse. He pitched the idea to Greg Daniels and he thought it would be perfect for the season 2 finale episode. When him and Steve had to fly to New York for the “Valentine’s Day” episode, they talked about it and made an outline for the episode on the plane. Greg suggested that Steve write the episode, but Steve didn’t want to do it at first because he had a lot going on. Greg talked him into it.
Fast Fact: This is a supersized episode. Greg did an interview for the Chicago Tribune, and he mentioned that he wished the finale for season 2 could be supersized. Fans of the show got together online and created petitions for a supersized episode until NBC gave in.
Fast Fact: Kent Zbornak hired a company that specialized in creating casinos for parties to make the casino night in the warehouse. He used all the employees from the company as extras in the episode.
Some of the cast members actually played the casino games in between takes. Jenna played Poker.
Rainn Wilson sometimes hosted Poker games in his garage on the weekends.
Pam winking at Jim in the cold open was scripted.
Jenna didn’t actually move the coat rack with an umbrella in the cold open. There was a crew member that had a clear string to pull on the coat rack.
The coat rack prank wasn’t originally supposed to be the cold open, it was supposed to go after the intro. The original cold open is in the deleted scenes.
At 4:14, all of the accountants are standing up. Most of the time when Michael came out into the bullpen to make announcements, the accounting department had to stand up for the scene in order to be in the shot.
Michael’s “why are you the way that you are?” bit is completely scripted word for word.
Jim saying “Guys, the Afghanistananis” was improvised by John Krasinski.
Mindy Kaling came up with Kevin’s band name Scrantonicity. In the original script, the name of his band was Jokers & Tokers. In the band video, Brain Baumgartner was actually playing a Steve Miller Band song. He wasn’t actually playing the drums, he was faking it, and he didn’t learn to play until the season 3 episode “Phyllis’ Wedding.” After they recorded Kevin’s band video, they couldn’t get permission to use the Steve Miller Band song, so they turned it into a The Police tribute band and Brian had to dub his voice singing “Don’t Stand So Close To Me.”
At 9:43, the shot of Jim putting the VHS tape labeled “Scrantonicity” into the VCR was recorded later on. At 22:05 in the warehouse Roy comes up to Kevin to talk about his band. Roy mentioning the band’s name was dubbed in later.
The idea behind Pam’s casino night dress was that it was a bridesmaid dress from a previous wedding she had been to. They had a whole rack of dresses for Jenna to try, but that was the first one she tried on and they loved it.
The watch Pam is wearing was always on her wrist in previous episodes, you just can’t usually see it because she mostly wears long sleeve shirts.
At 13:24, Angela breaks character in the background of the scene.
Dwight calling Jan by the code name Lan Jevinson was improvised. The original line was supposed to be “no sign of date number two.”
State Farm Real Deal: The scene where Dwight kisses Angela and then she slaps him and walks away smiling was not filmed in one take. Angela was nervous about slapping him so there were many takes where it was too timid. Rainn told her to just go for it, and it took them 13 takes of her actually slapping him until they got it. On one take she slapped him really hard on the ear, and another time she missed his face and hit his glasses.
Angela’s little look at the camera at 18:48 when she’s walking away from Dwight was an idea that was improvised on the day of shooting.
At 18:51, you can see how red the side of Rainn’s face is from Angela slapping him.
When Jim and Pam are looking at each other while playing Poker after Jim says “Wow. I think you’re bluffing,” the script reads “Pam makes a playful gesture, like “Who knows?” Jim stares at her intensely. She smiles her best enigmatic smile. Jim enjoys this woman so much, he finally has to break eye contact and shake it off.”
Nancy Carell was intimidated to work with Steve in this episode because he’s such a great actor and she hadn’t acted in a while.
Dwight asking Jan “Are you staying with Michael?” was improvised by Rainn.
Greg Daniels hosted a viewing party to watch this episode when it aired.
John Krasinski played a prank on Jenna during the shooting of the season 4 episode “Money.” John and Jenna had to drive up to Schrute Farms multiple times for the scene, and Jenna was sweating because they had to turn off the car's A/C so it wouldn’t interfere with the sound. But John was fine and about 15 minutes later Jenna realized that John turned on her seat warmer. John stole the prank from George Clooney, when he did it to John while they were filming the movie Leatherheads.
John was originally asked to audition for the role of Dwight, but he thought he would be better at playing Jim so he asked them to call him back when he could audition for that role instead.
John and Jenna both thought that the other person would be perfect for the role of Jim and Pam when they first met.
In the last episode of the show, John stole the Dunder Mifflin sign that everyone did talking heads in front of. At the wrap party, Greg told John he really wanted the sign but someone already took it. But John didn’t tell him.
Angela got to keep the painting of her that was hung up in the senator’s house.
Jenna asked if she could have Pam’s painting of Dunder Mifflin but they told her no because it was being catalogued and stored at NBC. But as she was leaving, Phil Shea secretly gave her the original painting and told her he made a copy of it for NBC.
Phil sent John a box of props including Jim’s satchel, name plate, and the teapot.
John was so nervous for the scene where Jim tells Pam he’s in love with her.
The kiss scene was filmed the night before the scene in the parking lot. The parking lot scene was the final thing they shot for the episode and it took longer than any other scene. They also played around with the dialogue a lot.
Jim and Pam’s kiss was John’s first onscreen kiss and Jenna’s second. Jenna’s first was in a movie called Born Champion.
John and Jenna were both very nervous about the kiss.
After Jenna rehearsed the kiss scene alone so she could see how it would play out, they told her to go back to her trailer until she was called, and she had to be alone. John and Jenna were not allowed to talk to each other or see each other until they filmed the scene.
All of the other cast members had to wait in their trailers for three hours during the shooting of the kiss scene.
They only used one camera for the kiss scene and it was set up in the kitchen. There were no cuts, they had to get it all in one shot. They did three takes, and Greg picked the last take to use for the show.
Randall Einhorn really wanted the episode to end with not being able to see Pam’s face so the viewers would have no idea what her reaction was.
When Pam is on the phone with her mom, no one was on the other line. Jenna wrote on her script what she thought Pam’s mom would be saying to her. When she says “Yeah, I think I am,” Jenna wrote in her script that Pam’s mom asked her if she was in love with Jim.
The cast didn’t know what would happen with the Jim and Pam story line in season 3.
A few weeks before they went back into production for season 3, Jenna got called in to do a bunch of chemistry read auditions with possible actresses for Karen.
In this episode, Melora Hardin and David Denman became series regulars.
(Note: Gabe is still there and Erin/Andy are a couple because I'm envisioning this as a season 6 episode. It just feels like a season 6 kind of episode.) Michael is driving by the Scranton Community Theatre and sees they're putting on RHPS as a performance. He watches it and is confused yet inspired, deciding to watch the movie later that night. For "charity" the way he did with the casino, he decides to put on his own version of RHPS. The following day, he announces his idea to the office and says that he spent "all night" (really just 1-2 hours) taking some "creative liberties" by editing the original script, and announces a time and date. Darryl, his music director and singing coach, offers to give them a rehearsal space in the warehouse, but only if he can get a raise. He assigns Gabe as an acting coach (thinking he's weird enough to like Rocky) and Phyllis as a costume designer, and tells Toby, Meredith and Creed that they should stick to being Transylvanians (basically the ensemble cast) because "no one would want to see them up front anyway". He casts himself as the criminologist, Kevin as Riff-Raff (solely due to the fact they're both bald), and Stanley as Dr. Scott (because of the fact that he can sit down the whole time). Oscar offers to be Dr. Frank-N-Furter, thinking it could give him a chance to show how he "feels inside". Michael also advises that the actors and crew members promote the show through their sales calls. Meanwhile, Dwight and Angela come together to get the show cancelled - first, because it's "obscene" and "inappropriate for the office", and second because neither of them got cast. They tell multiple places to boycott the show by not going. And this leads to the casting of the leads. Michael tells the three couples (Erin/Andy, Jim/Pam, Ryan/Kelly) that they have to audition for Brad & Janet, and that the ones who don't get chosen will end up doing supporting roles. Pam turns out to be a closet RHPS fan and tells Jim all about it, including her performance in one in college, leading to them watching it in the break room. Jim loves it, and they have fun rehearsing for their audition. Kelly and Ryan are determined to get the parts so much that Kelly overworks him saying that their audition needs to be perfect. Andy tells Erin he wants to drop out of the lead role race and be Eddie because it means he would get to sing his own solo song, which she agrees to saying that it scares her just because it has horror in the title. Andy tells Michael, who agrees saying that it would be a better role for him. It ends up going to Jim and Pam. Erin and Kelly are cast as Magenta and Columbia, and Ryan is made assistant director due to his absurd ideas that Michael likes. Michael forgot one important role, however. Rocky. Dwight makes note of that when he and Angela are watching the film, specifically during the shirtless scene, and demands that Michael cast him as Rocky due to wanting to expose his "glorious body" to everyone. The rehearsals go well and the show is a full house, leaving Angela the only one that complains. They end with a cast performance of the Time Warp. Jo, hidden in the audience, congratulates them at the end and says that she was impressed.
Last night I watched The Office while high and took some notes
See title. My partner and I watched the run of episodes from 'Casino Night' up to 'Initiation' - probably one of the strongest stretches of episodes across the whole show. Here are a few notes I took from each episode of some things I'd never thought of before: Casino Night When Roy asks Kevin if his band will play Roy and Pam’s wedding, he asks Kevin not because he likes the band, but because he’s in charge of organising the band and it’s the lowest effort way of getting it all sorted. This is doubly significant because it’s the last scene we see Roy before Jim confesses his love to Pam. When Angela slaps Dwight he first looks shocked, then incredibly attracted to her. Gay Witch Hunt Jan convinces Oscar not to sue the company by giving him three months of paid vacation and a company car. David Wallace may taken this into consideration when he fired her, because this could be argued to have been bribery. I never noticed Larry Wilmore’s cameo as Mr Brown in Series 3, when he’s giving some training to the Stanford branch at the end of Gay Witch Hunt. The Convention When Jan says to Michael in front of Jim and Josh “I can’t be on top of you 24 hrs a day”, she says it because she knows he’s going to say “That’s what she said” and she’s attracted to how juvenile he is. When Josh says to Michael “if our branch absorbs yours’ I’ll try to find a place for you in Stamford” this is an indicator that he’s a stationery status-obsessed psychopath who would leverage a position at Dunder Mifflin to a senior position at Staples. When Michael is at the convention and he’s shown wearing a Microsoft Office T-shirt, this isn’t SWAG from this year’s conference, it’s from a previous conference and Michael wears it every year. When filming the scene where Pam goes on a double date with Kelly and Ryan, it must have been phenomenally difficult to keep a straight face with Mindy Kaling shoving chips into BJ Novak’s mouth while saying “he loves ketchup.” The Coup When Michael tricks Dwight into thinking that he’s the new General Manager of the Scranton Branch, Dwight knows that it’s a trick but he goes along with it to give Michael the opportunity to demonstrate his authority over Dwight. Dwight does this because he wants to give the General Manager position the strongest air of authority for when he takes up the position himself six seasons later. Michael isn’t offended that Dwight doesn’t like his Sebring, he’s offended that Dwight lied to him that he did in the first place. Jim has no intention of getting over Pam, he desperately wants Karen to be Pam. Grief Counselling Michael isn’t sad because Ed Truck died, he’s sad because he realises how short life is and that he doesn’t have a family yet. Initiation Jim is annoyed when Karen speaks French. He wants to like her, but he’s intimidated by not being the smarter one in a couple. Ryan’s a bad salesman not because he doesn’t have the skills, but because he’s scared of succeeding and becoming like Jim or Dwight – neither of whom he aspires to be like.

The Office Season: 2 Episode: 22 – Casino Night The Dunder Mifflin crew holds a casino party at the warehouse and Michael has two dates. Release Date: 11 May 2006 Run Time: 29 Min Director: Greg Daniels Writers: Steve Carell Trivia: · In this episode, Michael says he's donating his money to Comic Relief, even though it no longer exists. This was an homage to the original British series, where an entire episode (#2.5) was devoted to raising money for Comic Relief. · In "Casino Night" Creed is shown stealing from a vending machine. He holds up a candy bar. This a bar made by Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, a company founded in Scranton. · Creed mentions the excellent pea soup at the soup kitchen. He would be referring to the St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen at 500 Penn Ave. in Scranton (right across the street from the Penn Paper building shown in the opening credits of the show). The soup kitchen is for the homeless. · In his beginning monologue to the camera, Michael states that he considers himself to be an accomplished "philanderer." This word is often applied to men who engage in sexual relationships with multiple women simultaneously. The word he should have used is "philanthropist," which is more aligned with people who support charities. · Michael's line, "Jan Levinson, I presume", is a reference to Journalist Henry Morton Stanley's reported first words to adventurer Dr. David Livingstone, "Dr. Livingstone, I Presume", when the former found the latter in Africa. · After Michael makes his speech to get casino night started, he says "let's get it started--- black eyed crows". He is referencing to the song by the Black Eyed PEAS "Let's Get It Started" but has the group name wrong. This was a deliberate but subtle joke. · In this scene where Michael and all the others are playing poker, Michael goes all in on the first hand and Toby calls his bet but Michael folds his cards berfore there is a flop. It is never shown what Michael's losing had was. · Spoilers · In "Casino Night" Dwight tells Pam & Jim his tux belonged to his grandfather & that he was buried in it. He again wears it in the beginning of the episode "The Farm", when announcing the death of his Aunt Shirley. However, according to Schrute tradition, they shoot their dead before burial to make sure they are "completely dead". If his grandfather had been buried in this tux, there should've been bullet holes. Goofs: · At the poker table, both Michael and Toby go all in. Toby has a pair of Jacks, while Michael's hand is practically indistinguishable, presumably two mismatched cards lower than a Jack. However, the game is Texas Hold 'Em, and the dealer gives the hand to Toby without dealing any cards into the center of the table. · During the poker game between Kevin and Phyllis, Phyllis was dealt a six of clubs on the river. Therefore, Kevin's set of queens should have been good. Quotes: · Jim Halpert: Hey, can I talk to you about something? Pam Beesley: About when you want to give me more of your money? Jim Halpert: No, I... Pam Beesley: Did you want to do that now? We can go inside. I'm feeling kind of good tonight. Jim Halpert: I was just... I'm in love with you. Pam Beesley: [No longer smiling] What? Jim Halpert: I'm really sorry if that's weird for you to hear, but I needed you to hear it. Probably not good timing, I know that. I just... Pam Beesley: [Stunned] What are you doing? What do you expect me to say to that? Jim Halpert: I just needed you to know. Once. Pam Beesley: Well, I... I... I can't. Jim Halpert: Yeah. Pam Beesley: You have no idea... Jim Halpert: Don't do that. Pam Beesley: ...what your friendship means to me. Jim Halpert: Come on. I don't want to do that. I wanna be more than that. Pam Beesley: I can't. [a small tear runs down Jim's face] Pam Beesley: I'm really sorry if you misinterpreted things. It's probably my fault. Jim Halpert: [Trying to recover] Not your fault. I'm sorry I misinterpreted our friendship. · Michael Scott: Oh, and another fun thing. We, at the end of the night, are going to give the check to an actual group of Boy Scouts. Right, Toby? We're gonna... Toby: Actually, I didn't think it was appropriate to invite children since it's... You know, there's gambling and alcohol, and it's in our dangerous warehouse and it's a school night... And, you know, Hooters is catering. You know, is that enough? Should I keep going? Michael Scott: Why are you the way that you are? Honestly, every time I try to do something fun or exciting, you make it not that way. I hate so much about the things that you choose to be. · Michael Scott: Hey, Carol, how goes the real estate biz? Is it real good? Pam Beesley: It's still me. · Michael Scott: I am no longer your boss. Lady Fortune is your boss. Stanley: Will Lady Fortune give me a raise? Michael Scott: Shut it, shut it, shut it. · Toby: I don't really play cards, but I'm not going to lie to you. It felt really good to take money from Michael. Gonna chase that feeling. · Michael Scott: There are certain topics that are off-limits to comedians: JFK, AIDS, the Holocaust. The Lincoln Assassination just recently became funny. I need to see this play like I need a hole in the head. And I hope to someday live in a world where a person could tell a hilarious AIDS joke. It's one of my dreams. · Pam Beesley: Sometimes I don't put Michael through until he's already said something. I look at it as a practice run for him. He usually does better on the second attempt. · Michael Scott: Jan Levinson, I presume? Pam Beesley: It's still me. · Jim Halpert: [to Pam] I'm in love with you. · Dwight Schrute: I'm Michael's wingman. I've got his back. Two dates. He's got two dates tonight. My job is keep Jan away from Carol and vice versa. Michael said, "We must deceive them, so as not to hurt them, and in that way, we honor them." · Michael Scott: Okay, you know what? I will not donate my winnings to Comic Relief, since apparently, it doesn't exist. I am going to donate to Afghanistanis with AIDS. Jim Halpert: Nope. I think you mean the aid to Afghanistan. Michael Scott: No, I mean Afghanistanis with AIDS. Phyllis: Afghani. Michael Scott: What? Phyllis: Afghani. Michael Scott: That's a dog. Pam Beesley: No, that's Afghan. Michael Scott: That's a shawl. Dwight Schrute: Wait, canine AIDS? Michael Scott: No. Humans with AIDS. Creed: Who has AIDS? Jim Halpert: Guys, the Afghanistananies. Michael Scott: Okay, you know what? No. No. AIDS is not funny. Believe me, I have tried. · Darryl: [explaining to Michael why he doesn't want fire-eaters in the warehouse for Casino Night] We just have a lot of stuff down there that could be stolen. Michael Scott: That's ironic. Darryl: What? Michael Scott: That *you* are afraid. Darryl: Why? 'Cause I'm from the hood? Michael Scott: Dinkin flicka. Darryl: [to film crew] I taught Mike some phrases to help him with his interracial conversations. You know, stuff like, "Fleece it out." "Going mach five." "Dinkin flicka." You know, things us Negroes say. Michael Scott: Give me some. [Mike and Darryl do choreographed handshake] Darryl: [laughing] Oh, yeah, I taught him a handshake, too. · Jim Halpert: Excuse me. How long is the wait for a table for two? Dwight Schrute: I would never, ever serve you. Not in a million, billion years. Pam Beesley: It's a nice tux. Dwight Schrute: I know. It belonged to my grandfather. He was buried in it, so family heirloom. · Creed: Oh, I steal things all the time. It's just something I do. I stopped caring a long time ago. · Dwight Schrute: [In response to Jim's claims of childhood telekinesis] I don't believe you. Continue. · Ryan Howard: One beer and one Seven and Seven with eight maraschino cherries, sugar on the rim, blended if you can. Jim Halpert: So, that's still going on, huh? You and Kelly? · Michael Scott: Why are you here? Dwight Schrute: When Darryl was coming, you said you wanted me here for protection. Michael Scott: Not. I said, not that. · Kevin: I suck. · Michael Scott: Two queens on Casino Night. I am going to drop a deuce on everybody. · Michael Scott: Love triangle. Drama. All worked out in the end, though. The hero got the girl. Who saw that coming? I did. · Michael Scott: Comedy's very much alive, as are homeless people. · Michael Scott: Jan and I understand each other. The romance thing is sort of on hold for the time being, but we've remained good friends. Good friends with privileges. Not now, someday. https://www.reddit.com/DunderMifflin/comments/930x55/previous_rewatch_threads/
Previously on The... fake... Office (Cold Open) Michael walks into the office looking tired. He mumbles something incoherent to Pam. Pam: “What?” Michael: “Uh…” Michael yawns. “... morning, Pamcakes.” Pam: “Why so tired?” Michael: “Someone broke into my condo last night.” Pam: “Oh my god. Are you okay?” Dwight jumps over his desk, knocking over his and some of Jim’s items. Jim crosses his arms and leans back in his chair. Dwight: “Did you see who did it?” Michael: “I did not, but the police are on it, and they will catch her. You can’t hide from lady justice.” Michael leans in toward the camera. “Not in my town.” Dwight: “So the perp is a woman.” Michael: “I… did not say that. It could have been a man with a high pitched voice... to try and fool me.” Dwight: “Or using a voice synthesizer.” Michael: “Maybe. I don’t know. I just wish I could have seen her face.” Dwight: “Was she wearing a mask? What kind of mask was it?” Michael: “You know it all happened so fast. I heard a crashing noise, and then before I knew it I was in my bathroom closet.” Dwight: “You know what you needed?” Michael: “A hug.” Michael raises his eyebrows at Pam. Dwight: “A gun.” (Talking Head – Pam) Pam: “I don’t want to open up a debate about guns or gun rights, but I don’t think Michael should own a gun.” Pam frowns. “Michael once told me that he thought the safety on a gun makes it so that it only fires blanks.” (Back in Office) Michael: “I don’t need a gun, Dwight. I already have two guns right here, so...” Michael pats his arms. “She’s just lucky I didn’t decide to use them.” Jim: “Because you were hiding in your bathroom closet.” Michael: “No. No,” Michael turns to the camera. “Because, I do not hit women.” The camera pans to Meredith. The camera pans back to Michael who saw the camera pan. Michael: “Cars don’t count.” (The office – near reception) Oscar: “Congrats Kevin.” Phyllis: “You deserve it.” Michael: “What’s all this?” Jim: “Kevin’s a millionaire— his stock blew up.” Jim pats Kevin on the back. Kevin nods his thanks. Michael: “Wait…Quantical Enterprises? The stock Andy mentioned on the podcast last week?” Kevin: “Yep.” Michael seems to be unable to speak. Jim: “You okay?” Michael: “I bought it too. I put all my savings into it.” Michael hugs Kevin, and then shouts. “We’re millionaires!” Kevin: “What are you going to do with your money, Michael?” Michael looks around the room. He sees Holly in the background in the annex talking to Kelly. The camera pans back to Michael who smiles. Michael: “First, I’m going to take my lady out for the most romantic business lunch she’s ever had.” He turns to the camera. “I’m thinking Red Lobster.” Pam: “That’s sweet.” (Talking Head – Kevin) Kevin: “I’ve made a killing off of the stock market. A. Killing. Oscar is so jealous.” Kevin begins giggling. “What I’m going to do with my money is double it. Then, I’m going to buy my own river-boat casino and have free money forever. And, a river-boat casino.” He nods his head. (In office - Jim’s Desk, Pam is standing facing Jim) Pam: “Hey, good looking.” Dwight: “Yeah, hi.” Dwight shakes his head as Pam rolls her eyes. Dwight returns to his papers. Pam looks back to Jim. Jim: “Hi.” Pam: “You like the Phillies, right?” Jim: “Do I ever.” Pam reaches behind her back, her mouth open in mock surprise as she pulls out a signed, framed baseball card. Jim: “No way! Mike Schmidt!? How…?” (Talking Head – Pam. She’s sitting in front of a television. The picture on the screen is paused seconds after she had kissed Jim at the Chili’s in 2005. Jim has a grin and looks elated.) Pam: “Ever since I found out about the kiss, I’ve been trying to think of a way to top it.” Pam turns and points at the screen. “I mean, look how happy he is.” (Back at Jim’s desk) Jim: “This is incredible. Thank you!” Jim stands up and kisses Pam. After a few moments, Michael walks up to them. Michael: “Sorry to break up the hanky-pamky, but I need to steal your Pamky.” As they walk away, Jim holds up the card and mouths, “thank you!” (Talking Head – Pam in front of Red Lobster) Pam: “When Michael said he needed my help, I didn’t expect him to take me on his romantic lunch with Holly.” Pam rubs her belly. “I am eating for two, and I’ve been having the biggest craving for seafood. And Michael offered to pay.” Pam frowns. “I just hope I don’t lose my appetite.” (In restaurant) Holly: “I’m going to use the restroom. Michael, can you get me a tea if the waitress comes by?” Michael waves his hand Michael: “Nonsense, let’s live it up.” Michael leans over table. “I heard rich people like to put gold shavings in their food. Maybe… they have a drink with gold or… some kind of foreign metals in it…” Pam: “I’ll order you a tea, Holly” Holly: “Thanks.” Holly leaves. Michael: “Pam. Pam Chowder. I need to talk to you about something before Holly comes back.” Pam: “Oh, boy.” Michael: “Now that I’m a millionaire, I feel like I have the obligation to live more luxuriously. Have you ever seen the movie, Indecent Proposal?” Pam shakes her head and looks down at the menu. Under her breath she mutters, ‘no, just no’ Michael: “Well, I have a kind of indecent proposal to ask you.” Pam: “Michael, there’s no amount of money… on this planet or universe… that would get me to sleep with you.” Michael: “What? No,” Michael looks offended. “I want to commission you to paint something for me. Well more for Holly, but for me too.” Pam: “Oh. Well, why would that be indecent?” Michael: “I won’t be wearing any clothing. To paint you a picture— I will be showing my red lobster.” Pam tosses her menu away as she throws up her hands to the camera. (Talking Head – Michael in front of Red Lobster) Michael: “No, the thought never crossed my mind. I’m in love with Holly, and as cute as Pam will forever be…” Michael smiles. “It’s like that saying, ‘One in the hand, is like two in the bush.’ Well, with Holly, it’s more like three… in the heart.” (Back At office – Michael’s office) Oscar is sitting next to Michael at his computer. Michael appears to be on the verge of tears. Michael: “I don’t understand. You’re saying Kevin is rich and I’m not, even though we both bought the same stock.” Oscar: “The difference is you went long the stock and Kevin was short.” Michael: “What does height have to do with it?” Oscar: “No, I…” Michael: “Plus, I think Kevin is taller than me, so that can’t be right.” Oscar: “Think of it this way. You took a bet on the company by buying stock. Kevin bet against the company by buying short options. Do you see now?” Michael: “I… see… nothing.” Oscar: “Things could have been worse.” Michael: “Please, Oscar, don’t tell anyone. It would depress everyone out there to learn I’m not richer than they are.” Michael starts whispering near Oscar’s neck. Oscar looks uncomfortably at the camera. Michael: “Please, Oscar. Please.” (End Scene – Pam standing in front of a white wall) Pam: “So, no. I don’t think the baseball card did the trick. I mean, Jim was happy and everything, but it wasn’t the same smile. But I’ll get it.” Pam smiles at the camera. The camera pans out to reveal she is standing in her garage art studio. Michael walks in through a door wearing a robe. Pam, still talking to the camera, says Pam: “I initially said no. Then, Jim reminded me how expensive college will be for two kids.” Michael begins taking off the robe. Pam turns to Michael with a hand shielding her eyes. Pam: “We agreed. You have to keep the robe on.” Michael: “Fiiiine.” He tightens up the collar on the robe. “Prude.”
(Cold Open) Jim is sitting on Pam’s desk. They’re talking loud so Dwight can hear them. Pam: “Did you hear that noise last night? It sounded like it came from the abandoned factory down the street.” Jim: “Yeah, what was that? It sounded like a dog, but…” Jim shivers. Pam: “Do you think it could have something to do with that girl walking around the neighborhood? You know, the one with the really short haircut that took all of our waffles.” Dwight looks over to them, interested. Jim: “That’s where the waffles went?” Pam: “I just don’t feel safe at home anymore. Have you seen the drawings Cece made?” Jim: “You mean the ones with the blue rivers that she plastered all over our walls, how could I miss them?” We see Dwight mouthing the words, ‘Oh my god.’ Pam: “Something has to be done, Jim. Think of the children.” Jim: “I’ll take a look after work.” Dwight: “No!” Jim: “Dwight, we’re having a private conversation.” Jim almost breaks, but manages to keep from laughing. Pam: “No, Jim, hear him out. Dwight is a purple belt.” Dwight: Sighing, “Unfortunately, karate won’t be enough to defeat a Demogorgon.” Dwight pulls out an assortment of weapons from his desk; a hatchet, a can of hair spray, a lighter, a mace, etc. He puts them in his briefcase and storms out. (Talking Head – Jim and Pam) Jim: “We weren’t sure what we would do with all of our extra Halloween decorations last year—then it hit us.” Pam: “Jim spent all night putting them up in the abandoned factory.” She smiles at Jim, then frowns. “You don’t think he’ll burn the place down, do you?” Jim’s looks at the camera and shakes his head. Jim: “I don’t…" He begins fidgeting with his hands. "Think so.” (Inside the conference room Holly and Michael are sitting next to each other, both leaning over a piece of recording equipment.) Michael: “How is everyone in podcast land? This is Michael Scott, and sitting next to me is the very funny, very talented, and —you’ll have to take my word for it— very smoking, Holly Flax. Holly, say hi to everyone in podcast land.” Holly gives Michael an excited smile. Holly: Affecting an old-timey radio voice, she says, “Hello to all of yous in podcast land. Say, what’s the weather like this time of year?” (Talking Head – Holly) Holly: “I think Michael really believes there’s a county called Podcast land.” She tilts her head to the side. “He recently asked me if I thought it would be fun to visit there.” Her smile falters slightly. “Sometimes I can’t tell if he’s pulling my leg or not.” (Back to Conference Room) Michael: “So, this is the first Munder Difflin Paper Podcast. Not to be confused with a certain”—cough—“paper company.” (Talking Head – Michael, behind his desk in his office) Michael: “Yeah, we had to change the name after someone in corporate heard our discussion of the whole Bill Cosby affair. It… was not well received.” Michael crosses his arms. “Not the discussion so much, but rather, our dramatic re-interpretation.” Michael frowns. “And you know what? Holly did an excellent Bill Cosby impersonation. Very tastefully done.” (Back to Conference Room) Michael: “What’s our first segment, Holly?” Holly: “I thought we could start with relationship advice.” Michael: “Yes! Let’s bring in our relationship experts.” Michael leans over and dials an extension on the conference room phone. Jim’s Voice: “Hello?” Michael: “Jim, grab the Pamster. Get her out of her wheel, and get her in here. One order of P.B. and J., please.” Jim’s Voice: Sigh Michael: “On the double.” Jim and Pam walk in. Pam is visibly pregnant. Holly: “Looks like we’ve got three guests for the price of two.” Pam smiles and rubs her belly. Pam: “I guess so.” Still smiling she adds, “He might be a little hard to hear.” Jim helps Pam into a seat then sits down next to her. Michael: “Well, let’s get a mic up in there, and hear what the little guy has to say.” Holly: "Michael." Pam looks at the camera, mouthing, ‘what?’ Jim shakes his head. Michael: Voice strained from trying not to laugh, “This is baby Halpert, and it’s so dark in here. Am I a boy or a girl, let’s find—“ Holly: “Let's go to email.” Michael: “Huh? Oh, yeah, uh… okay." Michael checks his tablet. "Alrighty, our first email asks,” He looks over at Jim and Pam, mouth open in excitement. “Wow, this is timely, our first email asks, ‘Is it normal to stop having sex when the wife gets pregnant?” Michael looks over and asks, “Jim? Pam? Who wants to take this?” Jim shakes his head and looks down at the table. Pam looks at the camera, her cheeks reddening. Jim: “Hey,” Jim says as he claps his hands together, “How about we do another one.” Michael presses a button on a soundboard. A pre-recorded voice comes from the speakers— it’s Michael’s voice. Pre-Recorded Michael: “That’s what she said.” Jim: Looking confused, “The sound effect is your own voice?” Michael: “I...” Michael looks to Holly then the Camera then back to Jim, “They’re all of me.” Jim looks at the camera. Michael: “All right,” Michael waves his hands and continues, “Fine. We’ll do another. Ahhh, a good one! A listener wants to know what Jim’s 2005 Dundie was. Hmm…that’s not really a relationship question…” Jim: “Well, that was the first time Pam and I kissed so…” Pam: “Wait, what?” Jim: “Have we never talked about this?” Pam: “No, when did I kiss you?” Jim: “After you won ‘whitest sneakers’, you seriously don’t remember?” (Talking Head – Pam) Pam: “What!? I thought our first kiss was after that Casino night we had in the warehouse.” Pam looks at the camera. “Why didn’t you guys tell me? Our first kiss and I don’t even remember it!” (Back to Conference Room) Michael: “Alight, exciting stuff on the Munder Difflin podcast today. Taking trips down mannerly lane.” Holly: “Next up, Andrew Bernard with his segment, ‘Nard Talk’.” Michael pushes a button on his soundboard. Pre-recorded Michael: “Nard Talk!” Andy: “Thank you Michael and Holly, it’s good to be back. This week on Nard Talk we’re going to go over the Nard’s stock picks of the month.” (Talking Head) Andy: “I took a semester of personal finance at Cornell, and I always listen to Planet money on the drive home, so, yeah, I’m kind of an expert on…” Andy struggles to think of the term, “Financial… comings and goings. But, no, I don't personally invest any of my money. Nard Talk is more of a 'Do as I say, not as I do' kind of thing.” (Back to Conference Room) Andy: “Ford Motor Company? The Nard gives that stock… a solid bark.” Andy pushes a button on a soundboard placed in front of him. We hear Andy barking loudly through its speakers. Camera pans to Michael who is glaring daggers at Andy. Michael: “What did I say about bringing your own soundboard?” Andy: “Not to.” Michael: “And what did you bring?” Andy pushes a button. It’s him whimpering like a dog. Andy gives Michael a sad face with his bottom lip curled down. In the background, past the blinds, we see Jim reading something on his desk. Pam is looking over at him with a sad smile. (End Scene – We’re behind Kevin. He’s placing an order on his computer. Oscar is standing behind him, shoulders crossed.) Oscar: “Really, you’re putting your money into that company? The debt ratio alone, Kevin…” Kevin: “It got like three nard barks. The stock is hot.” Oscar: “Did you even look at their 10k? The historical average? Last year’s ROI?” Kevin: “I tried, but… too many numbers…” Kevin shrugs with his hands spread out. “It’s easier to go off of the experts.” Oscar throws up his hands and walks away.
I feel like I'm always missing a scene in Casino Night because Pam rejects Jim and he seems to accept that she is....rejecting him, and then in the next scene he just walks straight in and kisses her? It seems so weird because she just said no. Did he just not believe her or something? Thank you in advance (sorry if this has been asked before)!
Jim Halpert is the best character in The Office (Analysis)
Jim Halpert is the best character in the U.S. Version of The Office. Here's why. We're introduced to him explaining how boring the job of being a salesman is (i.e the explanation of him going on about clients, paper supply, etc). His beginning character development is slow, and his main point(s) within the 1st and second season are him going after Pam and messing with Dwight. Furthermore, this adds an enjoyment to watching; not knowing if the next episode will contain a prank on Dwight in the opening scenes or another conflict between Pam/Roy VS Jim. Not only does this create a "enjoyment" incentive, rather it pushes fans who are interested in over the top comedy mixed with some end goal romance (I know I am). Heading into Season 3, after the famous Casino Night moment where Jim professed his love to Pam, the main goal of Jim is at this point just Pam, with small and occasional pranks on Dwight. It goes back and forth between the 2 branches which is the first good insight at the expanded world The Office started to show other than just the Scranton employees. Jim did this. He was responsible for showing the viewers this other branch and showing the true and big competition branches took part in to get ahead in sales and not be downsized/merged. Which other character(s) did this? None. Once the merger occurred, Jim created tension and this tension led to the viewers noticing smaller details of the over the top drama that seeked in when the branches merged. Not only did this add great importance to his character, but it added a more sincere form of appreciation in Jim and Pam. And as we all know, at the end of Season 3 Jim gets with Pam (as shown in the 1st episode). And that is the MAIN reason why Jim is the best character. Through what he created in his own sense of incentive comedy was not matched by any other character (only Dwight came close). And in the following seasons he creates a story for himself which the extreme majority of fans (assumption) enjoyed. You got to saw his relationship develop, how his work played into his relationship as well as how he completely changed his insight into other character(s) such as Dwight and Michael. This is shown when Jim cries and has the saddest moment on the show (imo) in his goodbye to Michael, which shows how sometimes he insulted and viewed Michael as stupid/crazy and as a real person who he connected with. Also, Jim's "frenemies" relationship with Dwight proved to be one of the best part(s) in the show. Becoming his friend, his Assistant TO THE Regional Manager, as well as being his best man at Dwight's wedding (an extreme sign of respect). Finally, (some info repeated) as the show came to an end and we saw Jim take opportunities and had conflicts with Pam, it shows how much of a good character he is inside and out. Him realizing he couldn't lose Pam and he had to focus on her instead of possibly making tons of money at Athlead (Athleap ;)). Then again, the character development showed not only some maturity increase throughout the show, but rather a humbleness and sense of who he really was as the show came to an end. In conclusion, Jim Halpert is the best character in The Office due to the clear fact of his amazing character development, personality realization, friendships and the impact he has on the show's story.
3rd Time watching Entire Show thru...why it was different.
The office holds a special place for me b/c it was my wife and my show when we first started dating. It always brings back good feels. This is the third time I've watched it through (including the original run) on Netflix. I couldn't believe how many times I thought to myself "they would never air this today". This show would get protested right off the air. Don't get me wrong, I still laughed my ass off but it was sad now. The episode where Michael calls Oscar 'faggy' is quite possibly the most accurate portrayal of perceptions towards homosexuality in the workplace that's I've ever seen. It was light hearted yet Oscar stood his ground and it was comedic gold right down to Oscar taking the settlement to not sue. Dwight having weapons in the workplace would have been seen as insensitive to modern workplace violence... The most iconic scene in the entire show where Jim goes in for the kiss of Pam on casino night would have been torn apart as sexual harassment... Couldn't make fun of Meredith's alcoholism... Andy's trip to anger management would have been off limits to ridicule... The list of things that Michael did that would have been too "offensive" for TV is impossible to document. The last advice Michael gave to Gabe before he left was to put a little pit of markup on his adam's apple so he wouldn't look like such a transvestite! NO WAY that makes it on TV now and was hilarious! The weird things is this show was diverse w/o ever really throwing diversity in your face except in humor. It made fun of sexism, homophobia, ageism, alcoholism, classism, materialism, and every ism you can think of. Just makes me wonder how much we're missing out on today.
My friends and I have been going back and forth on this, but it really hit me the other day how critical to the entire arc of the show it is when Michael says to Jim on the cruise, "BFD Engaged ain't married." IMO this is the most important thing said the entire series. This quote is what ultimately gives Jim the strength to take his shot during casino night and to not give up on his love for pam even tho she was engaged with Roy. Especially since at the time Michael said it, Pam and Roy had just planned their wedding date and Jim was feeling awfully down. It leads to Jim ending things with Katie and the whole scene bw Mike and Jim is just great. Thoughts? Any other moments more significant?
In a recent episode, Fischer and Krasinski spoke about the season two finale, “Casino Night.” The episode is a big one for Fischer’s and Krasinski’s characters, Jim and Pam, as Jim finally confesses his love to Pam, who rejects him. Pam says, “I can’t.” She begins to say, “You have no idea.” But Jim interrupts. “Don’t do Jim and Pams marriage tenses, but love never fails. Fischer wrote in her episode script that Pam tells her mom on the phone that she thinks she's in love with Jim, and the actors were purposefully kept apart before the kiss. After Jim and Pam part from their kiss, Pam decides that she still has to honor her commitment to Roy and tells Jim that she plans to go through with the wedding. Disappointed and broken-hearted, Jim accepts a position at the Stamford branch of Dunder Mifflin. It's been nearly 15 years since the "Casino Night" episode of The Office aired, but fans can't seem to get enough behind-the-scenes info on Jim and Pam's big kiss scene.. On the latest episode of the Office Ladies podcast, former co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey spoke with director Ken Kwapis about his time on the show and what it was like to direct the fan-favorite Season 2 finale. The thing is, in each of these scenes, the kisses are different. In "Casino Night," Jim kisses Pam, and they look at each other like they don't know what to do next. "Gay Witch Hunt" opens the scene with the two mid-kiss, and when it's over Jim smiles and says "You have no idea how long I wanted to do that." Later, he finds Pam talking to her mom on the phone in the dark office, and the two end up making out before the scene cuts to black.
